Lay Chaplaincy - Introduction

You don't need a Divinity degree to help heal a broken world

Chaplains of all backgrounds and traditions learn from one another

The path of offering spiritual care is for anyone who feels called to serve as an ally and companion to others. As has been said of artists, chaplains tend to see what others do not; they hold in mind those forgotten or hidden within institutions, homes, and neighborhoods. They hear the voices calling from the margins of society, people asking to be seen.

Lay Chaplaincy Preparation

Those who undertake the compassionate work of Lay Chaplaincy find that qualifications boil down to three: a calling to care, wisdom forged through one's own life experiences, including "failings," and the ability to respect the spiritual paths of others.

The training respects your wisdom and personal choices regarding spiritual beliefs and cherished traditions. There is no specific "one size fits all of us" theological training within a Lay Chaplaincy Program – you are simply equipped with practical skills you can use for your own deepening self-awareness, and to enhance relationships with others in your life. Topics include:

  • The practice of whole-hearted presence
  • The art of listening intently
  • Understanding the stages and complexities of grief and supporting others through crisis
  • Managing life transitions. Acknowledging the difficult reality of life changes, exploring possibilities
  • A broad, informed view of global faith and wisdom traditions
  • Introduction of "creative life support," offering encouragement via art, writing, storytelling, and additional techniques to help others access emotions. Such activities also support the human need to find meaning in life experiences.
  • Understanding when, how, and whom to refer a person in need of expert help.

Hope becomes a possibility when one says to another: "I see you. I'm here. How are you?" No agendas. No answers. Just accompaniment, as a spiritual friend and ally.
